The driver of the vehicle, Glenda Ann Greeson, 67, of Calhoun, was charged with DUI, failure to maintain lane and seatbelt violation after striking the tower. Greeson was taken to Gordon Hospital for treatment.
“The vehicle left the road on the south shoulder, came back across the roadway, traveled off the north shoulder, down a small embankment, hit a fence, traveled through a grassy area and then hit a power line support structure before coming to rest. She was taken to Gordon Hospital for treatment,” according to a statement from the Georgia State Patrol (GSP).
According to Georgia Power spokesperson Carol Boatright, the vehicle was impaled by a piece of metal from the utility tower.
The road remained closed during the day, for the week, and reopened only at night after 6 p.m., until Friday, July 6, according to Boatright, who says the road was closed for safety purposes.
No residents have gone without power due to the collision, and several large cranes were brought in to repair the extensive and costly damage done to the utility tower, according to Boatright, who says currently no charges have been filed by Georgia Power against Greeson.
As of deadline, Thursday, July 5 at noon, repair work to the tower was scheduled to conclude Friday, July 6, according to Georgia Power. Additionally, Greeson had yet to be booked into the county jail as of deadline.
