The Calhoun City Police Department is currently searching for three suspects involved in a robbery at the Wilco Travel Plaza at 2110 US Highway 41 North on June 18, 2012.
Police are searching for the same unidentified male suspect seen robbing large retailers in Florida, Kentucky, Virginia, and now Georgia within the last year.
According to Lead Investigator Detective Annette Printup with the Calhoun City Police Department, the black male suspect entered the Wilco Travel Plaza at approximately 10 p.m., with one black female and one white female entering the store approximately one minute later.
The two female suspects remained at the register as the first male suspect walked into the mangers office, then taking an undisclosed amount of money before the manager walked in on the suspect.
The male suspect then fled out of Wilco and across the street while being pursued by a Wilco Travel Plaza customer and employee, according to Printup.
The male suspect then brandished a gun, causing the pursuers to back away. The two female suspects got into a 1998-2005 champagne-colored Volvo, with unknown tags, and picked up the male suspect with the gun.
According to Printup, witnesses could not identify the gun and say that the suspects were believed to have headed south on I-75.
After posting the information to the Rome Police, other instances of theft by the same black male were reported to Printup, by the Rome Police who identified the suspect from a robbery last year.
Currently, the black male suspect was caught on security cameras at Big Lots in Jacksonville, Fla., with a second black male, not present at the Wilco burglary. The surveillance footage of the two suspects robbing the Big Lots in Florida is posted on Youtube.
A suspect fitting the male’s description, from the Wilco robbery, has been spotted at other retailers such as Sear’s and Kohl’s where reportedly excessive funds as much as $30,000, was stolen from these retailers in several different states.
“These three individuals are believed to be part of a larger group that travel around the South perpetrating these type thefts. We have received information from other agencies in Georgia as well as Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia confirming the three suspects, along with others, was captured on video while in the act of committing similar thefts” said Det. Lt. Tony Pyle.
According to Calhoun City Police Chief Garry Moss, forensic evidence was obtained from the scene of the crime, at the Wilco Travel Plaza, and the CPD is working in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies to identify the suspects.
According to Printup, the specifics of the case were originally withheld from the public to chase a lead. However, Printup now believes getting the photos of the suspects out to the public will prompt a lead to the identification and capture of the suspects.
