Gordon County, Calhoun gear up for Fourth of July

26th Annual Star Spangled Celebration to kick off Independence day celebrations

From adversaries with Britain in 1776, the United States and Gordon County will celebrate 236 years of Independence.

Though the United States was at war with Britain those many years ago, this Fourth of July, the American spirit of independence will be celebrated in grand fashion.

The 26th annual Star Spangled Celebration will commence at 6 p.m. gates open at 5 p.m., Wednesday, July 4, at the Cherokee Capital Fairgrounds on Highway 53/ Rome Rd according to a news release from the Northwest Georgia Regional Fairgrounds Board.

“Entertainment will be featured on two stages throughout the evening. Local fan favorite, oldies rock-n-roll group Perfect Peace, will be performing great music on the Mohawk Stage throughout the evening, along with two performances by fifties singing sensation Tommy Ray Gurley and local country sensation Chloe Litton,” said the release. “Performing on the Center Stage throughout the evening will be well-known Bluegrass Gospel group Southern Dawn, Josh Owens Acoustic and Expressions Dance Studios.

Free admission will be provided to the public, and safety and traffic will be regulated and coordinated by the Gordon County Sheriff’s Office. The event has been a staple in the Gordon County community for the past 26 years.

“This is the 26th year we have planned this event for the community and it is absolutely the best fireworks show in North Georgia,” said event founder and Northwest Georgia Regional Fairgrounds Vice President Bud Owens, who also explained Pyrotechnico, one of the world’s best pyrotechnic companies will put on a fireworks show.

The event will feature food vendors, music and a fireworks show. According to the release, the event attracts audiences in the thousands from all over Northwest Georgia.

According to Board member coordinator for the event, Ken Payne, visitors are encouraged to arrive early as gates open at 5 p.m. and traffic is expected to be heavy due to the large crowds.

For safety and traffic regulation around the fairgrounds, deputies from the Gordon County Sheriff Department will be in attendance.
