Future Gordon Central Warriors were on display this week as Chad Fisher and the Gordon Central High football team hosted its annual Warrior Football Camp Monday through Wednesday.

The camp was for kids ages 6-12 and lasted from 9 a.m.-noon each day. Fisher offered instruction along with several assistant coaches.

“We’re just trying to teach them some basic skills and fundamentals of football,” said Fisher. “We want to help the kids and get them ready for football season when it starts up in the next few months.”

Fisher said one of the main goals of the coaches is to maintain a balance between the kids learning the techniques that are being taught and also having fun.

“It’s a little bit of both,” said Fisher. “We try to let them have a good time and enjoy it, especially with the hot weather, and you try to teach them some quality skills along the way. It pans out pretty good, and it’s a good setup for the kids.

“They’re willingly participating and doing fantastic job of trying to do what we’re teaching them.”

Fisher said he was impressed with how well the kids responded at camp and were able to take in what the coaches were teaching.

“I thought they did a great job,” said Fisher. “It was probably one of the better groups we’ve had as far as overall listening and enjoying it. It was fun to work with them as it always is when they go out there and put forth a great effort.”

Fisher said it’s always fun to have a little change of pace and get a chance to work with the younger kids after being so used to coaching the high school players.

“It’s a completely different atmosphere,” said Fisher. “It’s not about wins and losses. It’s about going out there and having fun and teaching the game of football.

“It’s just an opportunity to be around the kids and watch them smile and laugh and have a good time.

Gordon Central is the third of the local high school football teams to offer a youth camp this summer after Calhoun held their camp last week and Sonoraville held their camp in May.

It’s also part of a busy summer for the Warriors, as they are now getting heavier into their summer workout program. They will also attend team camp at Northwest Whitfield High July 9-13.

Gordon Central is coming off their first playoff berth since 2005 last season, and will open the regular season on Aug. 31 at home against Coosa after scrimmaging Cass on the road the week before.

Three of the Warriors' first four games this year are at home at Ratner Stadium.
