According to Courtney Taylor, director of Gordon EMS, the award was presented at the annual EMS Week cookout, which honors employees of all local public
“The judging of this award was once again very difficult because each of the nominees from every represented department is exemplary,” Taylor explained. “Each of them is deserving of recognition for their dedication to work and community and that made the choice of a final, single winner very challenging.”
Nominations for the award were made by public safety department heads of all disciplines in Calhoun and Gordon County, he added. The nominations were then sent to a panel of unbiased judges.
“We were very pleased to present this year’s Kathy Cox Guardian Angel Award to Detective Printup,” Taylor said. “This award was created to not only honor the memory and service of Gordon County Ordinance Officer Cox, who died in an automobile accident on Aug. 21, 2008 while on duty, but to also recognize other public safety officials who share many of Kathy’s extraordinary values.”
In addition to award recipient Det. Printup, nominees for the award included Telecommunicator Andrew York of Gordon County E-911, Trooper Ted Kimbrell of the Georgia State Patrol, Firefighter Jim Chance of the Calhoun Fire Department, Lt. Heath Derryberry of the Gordon County Fire Department, and Deputy Eric Gutherie of the Gordon County Sheriff’s Office.
Cox’s husband, Retired Lt. Kenny Cox, assisted Taylor in presenting the award to Det. Printup after acknowledging Gordon EMS Paramedics Jennifer Henderson and Leslie Greeson, who recently came to his aid following a heart attack.
Earlier in the celebration, Taylor presented the Gordon EMS Above and Beyond Award to Deputy Eric Burns with the Gordon County Sheriff’s Office.
Nominees for the award included Jennifer Derryberry of Gordon County E-911; Ellis Payne, Alex Greeson, and Heath Derryberry, all of the Gordon County Fire Department; Robert Oglesby, Billy Green, Brandon Goss, B.J. McMahan, and Brett Silvers, all of the Calhoun Fire Department; Christy Nicholson of the Calhoun Police Department; and Todd Hold, MD, of the Gordon Hospital Emergency Department.
The nominations were submitted by employees of Gordon EMS in appreciation for their on-scene, above and beyond assistance to them. The nominations were sealed and sent to an unbiased panel of judges for evaluation.
Taylor concluded the celebration by thanking all public servants for their service to Calhoun, Gordon County, and Gordon Hospital.

Mike "Michael" Allen Holloway, of Calhoun, was involved in a fatal car wreck at the intersection of State Road 225 and Craigtown Rd at 5:10 p.m., in Gordon County, Wednesday, June 13, according to the Georgia State Patrol (GSP). Holloway was traveling North on Newtown Rd. when he failed to yield to the right-of-way, and was struck by another vehicle. Holloway was struck on his left side and ejected from the vehicle, according to GSP reports. The vehicle then rolled on top of Holloway after he was ejected, and he died at the scene of the crash.
