On Friday, April 20, faculty, staff and students of Calhoun Primary School celebrated Earth Day by participating in the second annual “Going GREEN” day.

Headed by Calhoun Systems Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Angie Gravitt, a second grade teacher at the school, the project helped students to understand and appreciate the earth as well as to decorate the CPS campus.

In an effort to raise funds to cover the cost of the project, Calhoun Primary’s Art teacher, Ms. Connie Ross designed a t-shirt featuring “BEE-cycle,” a recycling mascot who visits the students each week on the campus television news channel, BEE TV.

The “GREEN Team” at CPS met to discuss options for plant choices and locations, deciding on bright pink Knock Out Roses to adorn the fence enclosing the playground at the front of the campus.

E. Jones Landscaping and Design was contacted projecting the plan into action.

The flowering plants were delivered to the school after Mr. Jone’s crew had visited the campus to dig the holes in the specific areas chosen by the GREEN Team and marked as “safe” by the City of Calhoun.

Friday morning, with the assistance of Calhoun High School Honors Science students, and their teacher, Mrs. Kendra Arnold, Mrs. Gravitt, the crew from E. Jones Landscaping and Design, all students and teachers at CPS, took part in planting the 45 Knock Out Roses, with one plant and one location dedicated to each homeroom.

The high school students put the plants in the designated holes and the primary students filled the holes with dirt.

Each student was encouraged to give ground around their classroom plant a “love pat” before sprinkling water on the flowering shrub.

In addition to the Knock Out Roses planted by the students and teachers E. Jones Landscaping and Design donated six, 18-foot Maple trees to the school.

Mrs. Gravitt and the GREEN Team, along with the faculty, staff and students at CPS would like to thank E. Jones Landscaping and Design, Ms. Connie Ross, Eddie’s Tees, Calhoun High School Science teacher Mrs. Arnold, and the CHS Honors Science students for their assistance and contribution to this project.
