Tammy Shugart, a Resaca teacher, traded in her lesson books and chalk, to pursue a slightly different career as an art instructor.
Shugart teaches these art lessons right from her own home, which just so happens to be a Resaca landmark — the Old Barnett Hotel. However, these lessons are not a typical Picasso-esque creation; she adds a little biblical message with each work of art.
After giving up her job at Eastside Elementary School in Dalton, she felt “led” to start giving private art lessons where she incorporates lessons of Abraham, Noah and Jesus into her course material, she said.
The art encompasses life lessons that she interprets from biblical stories, and in doing so give her students’ artwork a deeper meaning and teaches them a little about life and God.
Currently, she has 12 students who have been with her since she started giving art lessons, and two of them are adults, according to Shugart. She said that there are not any age limits to her classes.
“I love it, and it is the time of my life. I stepped out on faith, because I just graduated and the economy was bad, but it has always been a dream of mine,” said Shugart. “I spend a lot of time preparing my lessons.”
She encourages the students she works with to never give up and always stay motivated. She said that her students really enjoy the experience.
According to Shugart some of her students have never had an art class before, and she believes this enriches their lives and gives them the ability to be creative and think outside of the box.
Shugart teaches all types of art including watercolor, oil and pencil drawings.
“I don’t limit myself,” said Shugart. Along with the private art lessons she also teaches at Cannanland and Dogwood Valley Christian Academy two days a week.
She will be holding an art camp this summer throughout the months of June and July at Shugart Studios, and all ages are welcome to attend. There is limited space available for the class; early registration is advised.
