LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) — A committee of citizens studying future plans for a suburban Atlanta airport has voted against allowing commercial flights, the latest step in what's been a contentious issue.

The Gwinnett Daily Post reports that members of the panel were divided, but voted Monday to recommend against the idea of moving toward commercializing Briscoe Field in Lawrenceville.

Supporters of adding commercial flights to the Gwinnett County airport believe it's necessary for economic development, among other things. Residents who oppose the idea have expressed concerns such as increased noise and traffic.

Gwinnett County commissioners, who have been split, still have the final decision on the issue.
