Georgia gymnast Mariel Box is looking to close out her collegiate career in style.

If her recent performance on Senior Night against N.C. State recently is any indication, she’s well on her way to doing that.

The Calhoun native recorded a 9.9 on the floor exercise to help the No. 6-ranked Gym Dogs to a 197.375-195.525 win over the Wolfpack on March 11, the second highest score of the season for Georgia.

Last weekend, the Gym Dogs finished third at the SEC Championships at The Arena at Gwinnett Center, and will go into the NCAA Regionals on April 7 as the No. 1 seed in the Auburn Regional. Other teams competing in the regional will be Oregon State, Auburn, Michigan, West Virginia and Michigan State.

Depending on how UGA performs at the NCAA Regionals will determine if they advance to Nationals which start on April 20 at The Arena at Gwinnett Center.

The performance against N.C. State was the fifth straight meet in which Box scored for the team on the floor exercise, a run which started on Feb. 18 against Kentucky with a 9.825. She then scored a 9.85 on Feb. 24 against Florida, a 9.75 on March 2 against UCLA, and a 9.8 on March 9 against Michigan before the N.C. State performance.

This is the final year of Box’s solid career at UGA as she has also spent time during her sophomore and junior seasons competing in the vault after overcoming a knee injury during here freshman season.

During her junior season, she recorded a 9.8 in the vault after being a late addition to the lineup at the SEC Championships

She was named to the SEC All-Freshman Academic Honor roll in 2009 and was also named to the SEC Winter Academic Honor Roll in 2010 as she is majoring in Biological Sciences with a Pre-Med emphasis at UGA.

Box was also recently named to the SEC Gymnastics Community Service Team as she is the co-vice president of the UGA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and also has been a part of the Special Olympics program in Athens and a volunteer gymnastics coach.

Before graduation from Calhoun High in 2008, Box trained with the Cartersville Twisters under Irina Podgornaya, Andrei Kouznetsov and Galyna Losinska.

She was the Georgia state vault champion in 2006 and 2007 and also the state bar champion in 2007. She also finished 11th in the all-around and sixth on vault at the 2007 Region VIII Level 10 Regionals.

She is the daughter of Brent and Cheryl Box, of Calhoun.
