A grandmother tackled a man who tried to kidnap her 4-year-old granddaughter at Crane Street Park in South Rome on Thursday afternoon, according to detective Joe Costolnick of the Rome Police Department.

Christopher Michael Carson, 34, of 1212 Spring Creek St., was charged with criminal attempt at kidnapping and enticing a child for indecent purposes (criminal attempt), both felonies.

Costolnick said Carson came out from behind a car and tried to snatch the girl at the East 13th Street park at about 1:30 p.m.

There are conflicting witness accounts as to whether the girl managed to get out of Carson’s arms or if he picked her up and put her back down.

Carson tried to run but the grandmother chased him and tackled him.

When interviewed, Carson told police “he liked her and wanted to hold her and touch her but stated he did not want to rape her,” Costolnick said.

Carson remained in jail late Thursday night.
