Baseball

The Sonoraville Phoenix played host to the Cass Colonels Tuesday, Feb. 28, as Cass was sent home a loser. Sonoraville came from behind for a 7-5 win.

Zach Collum got the start on the hill for Sonoraville, but was unable to find the strike zone. Easton Gallman replaced Collum in relief.

After each team took turns scoring, the Phoenix took the lead and kept it in the bottom of the 4th inning. Hunter Lay led off with a walk, and went to third on a pickoff throw by Cass. Hunter White singled Lay in to tie the game. White advanced to second on a passed ball and later scored the go-ahead-run on Cody Long’s hit. Long later scored making the score 7-5.

Gallman had the win, pitching 4-1/3 innings. He struck out eight and allowed four hits.

The Calhoun Yellow Jackets played against their rival the Ashworth Warriors.

The Jackets edged a win over the Warriors 7-2 in 6 innings.

Calhoun finished with 5 hits and 3 errors.

Ashworth had 4 hits and 9 errors.

The winning pitcher for Calhoun was Jordon Towe, who had 4 strikeouts. Also pitching for the Jackets were Dusty Baker and Grant Clark who both pitched 2 innings, and both had 3 strikeouts.

The Ashworth Warriors continued their winning ways against the Armuchee Indians beating them 4-0 on Tuesday.

Scoring for the Warriors was Victor Perez who scored 2 goals; Kenneth Cua added 1 goal and Valentin Avalos netted another.

Ashworth Boys Head Soccer Coach Daniel Worley is impressed with his team’s play.

“Our passing is improving and it seems like we’re growing more confident with each match,” said Worley. “We still have areas to improve upon, but we have the foundation for a successful season.”

The Sonoraville Phoenix traveled to Woodland to play the Wildcats. Unfortunately for the Phoenix, Woodland was prepared, defeating Sonoraville in penalty kicks. The game was tied at 1-1.

Getting the lone goal for the Phoenix was Marco Munoz.

Sonoraville Head Coach Jason McGuire sees his team improving, even thought they lost on Tuesday.

“We are progressing as a unit,” said McGuire.

Sonoraville Girls Head Soccer Coach Brandi Seiz is excited about the way her team is shaping up.

“Ladies worked together on spreading across the field, and our defense moving up as a unit,” said Seiz. “Many ladies got heads on the balls, and we looked like a different team.”

She added that all ladies saw playing time, including Sandi McCillin, Rozlyn Rule, and Erin Whitlock.

“Rebekah Cash played a solid game,” added Seiz.

The Calhoun Yellow Jackets traveled to Purple Hurricane territory to battle Cartersville.

The Lady Jackets had a remarkable win against the Lady Canes ending their three-year long winning streak, beating them in penalty kicks, according to Calhoun Soccer Coach Matt Veal.

Veal added that Leah Prather, Mary Katherine Black and Caitlyn Carroll had solid games.

“Chloe Rice had a successful shutout at keeper,” said Veal.
