The American Legion Post 47 of Calhoun held a special service for four courageous chaplains of the USA and Dorchasters in early February this year. On Feb. 2, 1943 the vessel was hit with torpedoes from a German U-Boat, taking just 20 minutes to sink.

According to a story by The Four Chaplains Memorial Foundation, the four chaplains gave their life vests to four other soldiers, knowing it would cost them their lives. The four men were Alexander D Goode, George L. Fox, Clark V. Poling and John P. Washington.

A service was conducted by Rev. Orvil Howard, and story told by American Legion Auxiliary Member Mary Beth Dismuke.

American Legion Commander Bruce Handerson states there is a special service held each year on the first Sunday of February.
