The Sonoraville boys and girls tennis teams hosted the Woodland Wildcats Thursday, Feb. 9. The home court advantage would fare towards the Phoenix on the boys side, but the Sonoraville girls would struggle in singles.

The Sonoraville winners, on the boys’ team, were James McCracken and Brad Whittinghill.

Sonoraville Tennis Coach Andy Wear said that they won the doubles match, “due to default.”

On the girls’ side of the court, Sonoraville won both doubles matches as Emily Evelti and Jaylin Jarrett and Riley Rule and Savannah Bray out-dueled Woodland.

During the girls’ singles match, Wear said the Phoenix had a chance, but could not execute.

“It was a tough day for the ladies in singles,” said Wear. “Woodland’s No. 3 singles outlasted Elizabeth Dutch in an 8-8 match and won the tiebreaker 7-4.”

Wear added, “Overall, I was very proud of the team, since this was their first match.”

He went on to say that Sonoraville has excellent talent and all they need is playing experience to get better.
