The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Gordon County held the first meeting of the 2012 Relay season on Jan. 10.

The event has three co-chairs this year: Kristy Brown, Joseph Marycz and Pam Stewart.

“We are so excited to kick off the 2012 Relay Season! We have some pretty lofty goals to meet and are confident that the people in the community are up to the challenge,” said Marycz.

Relay for Life will take place at the Northwest Georgia Regional Fair Grounds on May 4 this year.

Each year, Gordon County Relay has a different theme, and this year, the event will feature a Hollywood atmosphere.

“Our theme this year is, Relay goes Hollywood,” Stewart explained. “All of the Relay teams are encouraged to decorate their campsites in theme with their favorite Movie, TV Series, Game Show, Awards Ceremony, etc.”

Above all, organizers are planning for a fun-filled, community-centered event.

“Hollywood is all about glitz and glamour and if past events are any indication, this year will be over the top,” said Brown. “We have some pretty creative team captains … it promises to be fun.“

By supporting Relay for Life, members of the community help make the American Cancer Society’s services and progress possible in moving toward an ultimate goal: a world with less cancer and more birthdays.

The money raised through the American Cancer Society Relay For Life enables the Society to save lives by helping people stay well and get well through education such as I Can Cope, a free program providing information about cancer diagnosis and treatment, by funding researchers early in their careers, 46 of whom have gone on to win the Nobel Prize and by providing services such as the Hope Lodge, Camp For Kids, Look Good Feel Better, Man to Man, etc. Visit www.cancer.org to learn more.
