ATLANTA (AP) — A new study says Georgia's annual economic output would increase by more than $5.2 billion by 2040 if a new transit terminal and green space stretching from the Georgia Dome to the Capitol are built in downtown Atlanta.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the study says the economy would be fueled by reduced commuting time, jobs brought downtown and additional development.

The study was commissioned by the downtown development group Central Atlanta Progress.

The city and state have researched the potential for a transit hub at a downtown area known as the gulch near CNN Center.

Last year, the Georgia Department of Transportation signed a $12.2 million contract for a new master plan with a team of contractors experienced in large-scale developments.
