Calhoun Middle School hosted the 2011-2012 League Duals on Saturday as teams from the North and South Regions came together for a little wrestling.

The Sonoraville Firebirds started off strong as they defeated the Cartersville Purple Hurricanes 77-18 in their first match. However, in the second match of the day for Sonoraville, they faced the Woodland Wildcats and lost 58-39. This was Sonoraville’s only loss of the day.

In their next match set, the Firebirds dominated the South Central Chieftains defeating them 76-24.

The match forced a consolation final between Sonoraville and the Calhoun Yellow Jackets. The match was close and came down to the very last match.

The Firebirds took the match outscoring Calhoun, 47-42.

Hunter Quinn and Jaccob Bagwell went 4-0 during the duals for the Firebirds.

3-1 records went to Gavin Thompson, Gage Nicholson, Morgan Holt, Elijah Geronimo, C.J. Corley, Kevin Hurtiz, Dakota Allen and Skyler Wheaton.

Sonoraville Head Wrestling Coach David Bowers said that Jaccob Bagwell, usually in the 215-weight class, wrestled in the 285-class all day. Skyler Wheaton did the same for the Firebirds. Wheaton, usually in the 189-weight class, wrestled in the 215.

The Ashworth Warriors wrestling team did not fair as well.

The Warriors lost their first match against the Cass Colonels and then lost their second match to the South Central Chieftains 58-48. Dustin Meadows won both of his individual matches.

The Calhoun Yellow Jackets lost their first match against the Woodland Wildcats, 54-43. However, the Jackets would avenge their efforts on the Adairsville Tigers winning, 47-44. Winning all their matches was William Roblero, Jacob Callahan, Skyler West, Christian East, Taylor Stephens and Easton Trotter.

Calhoun Wrestling Coach Steven Waters is proud of the effort given by his team.

“The kids all did fantastic,” said Waters.
