ATLANTA (AP) — Georgians turned over nearly 3,800 pounds of unwanted and expired medications during an event organized by federal drug enforcement authorities.

The drugs were collected during the Drug Enforcement Administration's third National Prescription Take-Back Day on Oct. 29. That's more than the 3,509 pounds collected in Georgia during the second collection event last April.

During last weekend's event, more than 188.5 tons of drugs were collected nationwide, with 5,327 sites around the country.

DEA Administrator Michele Leonhart says the amount of drugs collected during the three Take-Back Days held so far speaks volumes about the need to develop a convenient way to rid homes of unwanted or expired prescription drugs, which could fall into the hands of abusers or pollute the environment.
