Update

David Shane Guyton, of Calhoun, has been identified as the suspect in last week's shooting. He is charged with felony criminal attempt to commit murder.

The officer's name has not been released yet because the incident is still under investigation.

Guyton remains at the Gordon County Jail.

Previous Story

It was approximately 8:20 p.m. Sunday night when an on-duty police officer allegedly noticed a man run a stop sign directly in front of him. Little did he know that what should have been a regular traffic stop would end with a shotgun being fired at him.

According to the Calhoun City Police:

The man allegedly failed to stop at a currently unknown stop sign, pulling out in front of the police officer.

When the officer pulled him over, the man fled, and again failed to stop at another stop sign (at the intersection of Beamer Road and Harris Beamer Road), running into a fence.

The suspect started to flee on foot and a pursuit ensued, according to the report.

After a short chase, the officer found himself the target of a 12-gauge shotgun. The suspect allegedly fired once, missing the officer.

The officer returned fire hitting the suspect once in the neck, according to the report.

He was life-flighted to Erlanger Hospital where he is in stable condition. According to Tony Pyle with the Calhoun Police Department, the suspect is expected to pull through.

The Calhoun office of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation into the shooting, and the officer has been placed on administrative leave with pay.

It is normal procedure for the Bureau to conduct investigations in the northwest Georgia area whenever local officers have use force to apprehend subjects, the report stated.

The investigation is being conducted by Special Agents Dan Sims and Audey Murphy.

These people would crucify Jesus for being a long haired, hippie communist if he were alive today. They have small minds and are proud of their ignorance. I hope the truth comes out and I am not going to condemn someone without knowing the truth, people rush to judgement based on a newspaper article, sad lives.

Loving guy my eye. The only difference between him and Troy Davis is he missed.This thug needs put away a long time before he becomes a better shot.He has already shot at a cop for goodness sake and the next time he may not miss.I think he would make a great prospect for a renewed state chaingang .It would be more fitting for him to work in some hard labor camp and support himself over sitting on his tail like past stints of incarceration when he apparently didn't learn a thing.

Your right, if it is true then it was a horrible thing to do however, Im also a professional and we are trained that ppl who engage in these types of bad decisions are at a very low point in their lives and act out of desperation and obviously not themselves, however AGAIN...this is not proven yet and I say that with a lot of emotion. I understand the public outrage but you dont know all the details and I am also speaking of the police officer and his family and loved ones. Its a tragic situation but I happen to know the person Shane really is and this isnt him. I also hapen to know his loved ones, and Ive watched them cry and grieve and their lives are turned upside down and all Im saying is these ppl are innocent and how about showing a little human compassion to the hearts that are breaking (on both sides) and Im sure the trained officer would no approve of how your speaking about the suspect for his family to read, Im sure he wishes he wasnt in this situation but as professionals, we have the compassion to see both sides and deal with the raw emotions that families of suspects should not have to endure. Just please keep this in mind when your emotions start typing and you cant turn back and undo the pain you are inflicting.

Were u there?!? The firing was "alledged" & yes there are many ppl that love him until its actually proven no one needs to be saying anything. Reguardless of his past he's still human & we all make mistakes or stupid decisions at times but at the same time so do they

Brutal? Brutal is firing a shotgun at an innocent police officer. "Great loving guys" do not shoot at police officers.

You ppl are brutal...his loved ones are reading this and no matter what you think about him, your hurting innocent ppl that are going thru a terrible time. The Shane I know is a great loving guy that needs help and has a good heart. Theres a lot of inside information that everyone needs to know before you sit upon judgement. To his loved ones...Im so sorry you are having to read this crap when your heart is grieving.

Shoot him in the ankle???????

Do you really think that he was aiming for the officers's ankle by using a shotgun. I commend the officer but I think he needs to go back to the firing range and practice up because the guy shouldn't be the burden of the taxpayers.

For anyone's information...shanes parents have gotten all the hospital bills, helicopter bills and doctor bills. The taxpayers have not spent any money on the medical side of this. His parents are suffering and still having to read this garbage.

Correct me if I am wrong bchic ,but wasn't he recently under suspicion for entering the home of a young lady and her family then brutally beating a coworker of hers to beyond submisssion? If not,It's still certain that he has a history and I still do not understand why he was on the streets anyways. If you ask me he belongs behind bars and for your information if someone is shooting at anyone with a shotgun their probably not gonna try to shoot them in the foot.

I would consider this guy very lucky. As to 'why not shoot the ankle', are you kidding?!? Had I been the officer, and was under attack by a shotgun wielding looney, I would have been aiming for right between his eyes!! Thankfully, the officer was not injured. The only thing that would have made for a better ending would have been if the bullet happened to hit 6 inches higher or lower, or 1-2 inches to the left or right. Then the court system (taxpayers) wouldn't have to deal (house, feed, medical care, defend...) with this "alleged" attempted cop killer.

i have known shane almost my whole life! he is not a bad person.. instead of putting people in cages and making him worse ( which they did!) they need to really help him....

Talk about a career criminal.You have to ask yourself with all these recent issues with this guy and on (parole/probation)how in the heck was he on the street anyways? This needs fixed and he needs to go away for a while.......
