Fort Oglethorpe police arrested a Rossville man for false report of a crime after he fabricated a story about being mugged in order to coax a Dunkin’ Donuts employee into letting him use the store’s phone.

According to Fort Oglethorpe Police reports:

Don Tanner Bowman, 20, of 51 Homeplace Road in Rossville was arrested on Monday, Sept. 26, on a charge of false report of a crime after he lied about being attacked and robbed near Providence Thrift Store in Fort Oglethorpe.

At approximately 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 26, officers were dispatched to Dunkin’ Donuts at 589 Ga. 2 (Battlefield Parkway) in regards to a possible robbery.

Upon arrival, officers met with Bowman who stated that he had recently left the Super 8 Motel after visiting friends. Bowman claimed to have been walking to meet his mother at which time he was attacked from behind in the Providence Thrift Store parking lot.

“Bowman stated that he cut through the back parking lot of the thrift store as a short cut, at which time he heard someone yell at him from behind,” officer Chad Cardin wrote in the report. “Bowman advised that he turned to see a large framed black male wearing a red shirt. Bowman stated that the male struck him in the back of the head and knocked him out.”

Bowman then told police that the man took his wallet and ran towards Big Lots on LaFayette Road.

Bowman then claimed that when he came to, he ran away from the scene and arrived at Dunkin’ Donuts, where he made contact with an employee and asked if he could use the telephone.

The female employee then called police to report the alleged robbery.

“I noticed that Bowman did have a small cut on the back of his head, within the area where he claimed to have been struck, but it appeared to already have scabbing,” Cardin stated in the report. “I also noticed that Bowman did not have any injuries consistent with falling down on an asphalt surface. I also found it odd that he claimed to have been knocked out, but could see the male subject running from the scene.”
