Playing in the underdog role, CMS fell to a very good LFO team 6-5 in extra innings.
“I never feel good about losing,” said Lady Jacket coach Tony Lindsey,” but deep down inside we know we should have beaten a team we are not supposed to beat.”
Calhoun’s defense opened the game on shaky ground, committing two errors that put runners on first and second. However, the Lady Jacket pitcher Tori Gaddis got out of the jam by getting LFO’s Kaleigh Clemmons to ground out to Jana Johns, who tagged the runner going to third and then throwing to first to complete the double play.
In the bottom of the inning, Calhoun jumped out to a 1-0. Blair Robinson started the inning by reaching base after getting hit by a pitch. Johns advanced Robinson to third on a single and Madeline Murray followed up with an RBI single.
The Lady Jackets increased their lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the second. Chloe Barnes led off the inning with a walk and courtesy runner Ashlyn Barnes stole second. Leah Prather then walked and a wild pitch moved both runners up a base. LFO pitcher Abby McKinny then threw a pitch in the dirt, allowing Barnes to score and moving Prather to third. Prather then scored on a passed ball.
LFO cut into the Calhoun lead by pushing a run across the plate in the top of the third but Gaddis and the Lady Jacket defense behind her, stopped the rally with a two-run lead intact.
In the bottom of the inning, Calhoun scored two more runs to give them a 5-1 lead. Johns kicked off the inning with a single and Murray beat out a bunt to put runners at first and second. Barnes then singled, scoring Johns. Sydnie Parker followed with a single to score Murray.
The Lady Jackets saw their growing lead slip away in the top of the fourth when LFO pushed three runs across the plate. The Lady Warriors started the inning with two singles up the middle. Faith Alexander then moved the runners over to second and third on a fielder’s choice. Ally Ellis then scored the two runners on a single to left. Ellis scored on an Aimie Davidson double.
Calhoun help on to their one run lead until the top of the sixth. The Lady Jackets needed just three outs for the victory but they would not come until it was too late.
LFO’s Kurston Henry led off the inning with a single to right and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Shelby Haight. With two outs, Ellis then hit a fisted blooper between second and the pitcher that was just out of the reach of a diving Ryan Brzozoski. The single scored Henry to tie the game at 6-6.
Calhoun sent three batters to the plate in the bottom of the inning but were not able to get any offense going.
LFO began the top of the seventh McKinny reached base on a Lady Jacket miscue and was advanced to second on a bunt single that caught the Calhoun defense off guard. Morgan Crawford then singled to left, scoring McKinny, and giving the Warriors their first lead of the game.
Brzozoski managed to reach base on a walk in the bottom of the inning for the Lady Jackets but would be stranded as LFO held on for the come-from-behind, one run victory.
