A Calhoun man found himself in jail after being caught allegedly stealing quarters from Al's Car Wash on Hwy. 41.

According to the incident report:

Matthew Brent Dempsey, 23, of Hood Street, is charged with theft by taking, criminal damage to property in the second degree and obstruction of an officer.

Dempsey was caught when an officer decided to check on Al's Car Wash knowing that people had been breaking into the machines for change.

When the officer pulled into the parking lot, he noticed Dempsey ducking behind a vacuum cleaner. According to the report, Dempsey jumped up and started running, quarters falling out of his hands.

The pursuit ended on Hood Street when officers found Dempsey hiding under an older model Jeep Cherokee with "two handfuls of quarters laying beside" him, said the report.

The report also states that he "was extremely sweaty and breathing hard."

Officers discovered six more quarters that Dempsey had allegedly dropped while running. The total amount recovered was $52.50.

Dempsey remains in the Gordon County Jail.

We could pass the plate and throw a pity-party for Lori. Anyone in? I know where we can get some quarters.

Hey, we're just stating facts. You told us not to judge and followed it with a judgemental statement. Goodbye

whatever I am done with your game, condemn me all you want, I don't care! Have a nice day!! Remember God loves you and try to always help those in need, and lend a sympathetic ear you never know when the shoe may on the other foot! God bless! Oh and I was born in Calhoun and lived most of my life there , I love Calhoun it used to be such a close knit community , I know ecomonic growth is necessary to survive but it is kinda sad when your own townsfolk start turning on one another.

If he came knocking at my door wanting food, you better believe I would feed him. How in the world can you tell us not to judge? To quote what you said, "No you would not you would most likely kick him down again. This society is pathetic, we all show up for church on Sunday" Explain to me how this is not a judgemental statement on your part. Do not try to preach to us about something, while doing the very thing you are preaching about..

Lorri has charged us as follows: “high and mighty” - “Pathetic bashing and back stabbing” – “…would you feed him? No you would not…” and “…kicking folks down and never help them out” all of which could or could not be factual given the individual.

Now, the coup-de-gras, poor Lorri has played the victim card “...seems like trying to be a good and decent person gets you bashed...”

I applaud your work with those in need, but you really do not seem up to the challenges of dealing with the slings and arrows of the comment board. Maybe that is why you seem conflicted.

nope not conflicted at all are you? You guys are real quick to assume that he is a druggie, or too lazy to work. Yes Daisy stealing is stealing and it is a sin and he should be punished. We are all human and we should help each other out.People make bad decisions in their life and I am sure they have regrets but how can one overcome if they are continually bashed over and over? Sorry if my convictions has offended anyone, but we have a community of about 200 people who are living in make shift tents in Montgomery , some women and children and people assume that since they are homeless that they are bad or druggies and they are not. They are people who have lost their way and just need someone to love them and believe them and need a little help . I am not defending this guy by any means , he stole and he needs to pay for it but instead of jumping to conculsions why don't we open our heart and mind and see if this guy needs some help. That's all I am saying seems like trying to be a good and decent person gets you bashed just as well on here as being a thief.

Lorri – how can you say none of us would feed this guy if he showed up on the porch? Seems you are dispensing judgment while berating those who judge. Are you really that internally conflicted?

I never said he should not be punished, I never said he was not a thief. I said we should not judge him. I work with the homeless in Montgomery and alot of these people are good people who have lost their jobs, and they are trying to support their family. And yes Deacon my mom is proud of me she taught me morals and values and that God is the only one who should judge. If this man knocked on your door and asked for food would you feed him? No you would not you would most likely kick him down again. This society is pathetic, we all show up for church on Sunday, sing our praises and go back to our comfy lives. I am not a sympathizer I am a human being just like everyone else. But let's keep kicking folks down and never help them out, but we will talk like we are high and mighty. You will get your judgement one day, as will he . Jesus preached to thieves, prostitutes and mulitudes of sinners, and he helped them , he did not persecute and judge. What makes you any better than him?

To the officer that made the arrest: Good Job!! I have my complaints about the CPD (concentrating efforts on issuing citations simply to raise revenue collections, etc.), but I do appreciate when an officer uses his intuition, skills and training in the manner that you did. In my opinion, this is the type of police work that genuinely "protects and serves" the community.

It is pitiful that some people are so lazy they would rather take 50.00 in change than work for a living. He is most likely a druggie that wanted a fix...and hungry really...lol have you check with the elderly who did work for living and are now on social security they might be hungry but they are not out stealing. Its time everyone stop feeling sorry for lazy butts that wouldnt work in pie factory and stand up for the ones that have worked and served our country.

Lorri, Lorri, Lorri......Sam Clements had a wonderful quote on human nature: "If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you. That is the difference between dog and man."

vishnu – I am pondering your last post in the light of it’s own absoluteness. Maybe I can work my way through it.

Pity those who would deal in absolutes; who, in ignorance, contempt and "moral" superiority, judge and condemn a person based on what they've done without knowing why they did it.

As Elms said, if those were the circumstances, there were LEGAL things he could have done. Plain and simple, he should not have stolen the money, he is a theif

No I would not want him to break into my car, I am not defending him , but who are YOU to judge him? You don't know what kind of situation he may or may not be in. It is not our place to judge others. Maybe if we all try to help others instead of bashing and back stabbing things like this would not happen.

If he were hungry, there are good folks that would give him a meal. If he were homeless, there are men’s shelters available in our region. We are unsure of his predicament except for this: he is a thief (allegedly) and in need of a shampoo and trim with a complementary body wax. Maybe his new roomies can help him out.

Wow Lorri, really? You are gonna defend this guy? If he was hungry, i'm sorry for him, but HE IS A THEIF! Ok, I'm hungry, and I have no money, can I come break into your car and your home to steal money and valuable items to sell to get money for food? I'm not so sure you would be ok with that and I am sure you would be on the phone with police and pressing charges. What else you wanna say?
