Construction of the joint Calhoun Middle/High School complex began at the end of last school year, and student parking spaces are now occupied by ongoing construction.
During the Tuesday, July 19, meeting, Kelly Bumgardner, the facilities and operation director of the new school project, said the team is still looking into procuring parking, either through parallel parking, or opening up an area for students.
Parking spaces, explained Greg Green, principal of Calhoun High School, will be sold to all upperclassmen first and then distributed to the remainder of student drivers.
“Mrs. Bumgardner has been working with Mr. Green and Ms. Knight to finalize a plan for parking for the students and staff,” said Superintendent Michele Taylor. “At this time a plan is in place to accommodate our student drivers. Additional information will be given to the students prior to the beginning of school.”
Also during the Tuesday, July 19, meeting, city BOE members:
-approved a food service agreement Georgia Educational Cooperative, a cooperative purchasing group consisting of 44 systems that purchase foods and supplies together to obtain the highest quality product while maintaining costs for all systems throughout North Georgia. “Bids are tabulated as a whole for the entire co-op, not as an individual system,” Taylor explained.
-approved a survey of property on King Street with Greg Massey for two lots that were purchased by the school system two years ago. “Proposals to complete an updated survey of the property were reviewed by the Board of Education.”
-approved field trip and fundraiser requests at the following schools: Calhoun Elementary School and Calhoun High School, including Sally Foster fundraiser, Fall Festival, PTO Ducky Derby and PTO Rummage Sale.
During the Superintendent’s report, each principal gave a brief description about what their schools are doing to prepare for the start of the school year, as well as make announcements.
Greg Green, principal of Calhoun High School, said 7 out of 9 re-test students passed the Georgia High School Graduation Test, offered in conjunction with Model High School in Floyd County.
“They put in a great effort,” Green said.
Michelle Knight, principal of Calhoun Middle School, said that buses would load on River Street, instead of Jacket Drive due to the construction of the joint/middle Calhoun school complex.
The meeting ended behind closed doors in executive session for the discussion of personnel. The next board meeting is Aug. 16 at 6 p.m. at the Depot, located in downtown Calhoun.
