The Fairmount City Council voted for raises at their regular July meeting, citing the move had not been made in a decade. The vote would double the amount paid to city council positions to $200 per month from $100 per month and would take effect based on the election cycle.

“We’re not voting ourselves a raise,” said Jim Dodd, councilman for Post 3.

Council Posts 2 and 4, currently held by Calvin Watts and Linda Sledge Johnson, respectively, would receive the raise after the November 2011 elections, when those posts will be voted on.

Posts 1 and 3, held by Max Mulkey and Jim Dodd respectively, would receive the raise after their next election, in November 2013.

“When I was Mayor,” Dodd said, “Council members made $25 per month.”

In other Fairmount news, the council voted to move some playground equipment to increase the number of parking spaces at the park. The equipment, mostly riding toys, will be moved closer to the other playground gear, giving the city four to six more parking spaces.

The council will get bids on paving the lot, which will increase to 120 feet by 60 feet from 120 feet by 40 feet.
