CARTERSVILLE — Tellus Science Museum has welcomed its 500,000th visitor in less than three years of operation.

The Cartersville museum hit the hallmark on Friday morning. The museum opened in January 2009 with eye-popping exhibits on fossils and minerals, a gallery dedicated to aviation and a state-of-the-art digital planetarium.

It was previously called the Weinman Museum and focused mostly on northwest Georgia's mining history and mineral-rich earth. That closed in 2007 and was absorbed into Tellus, named for the Roman goddess of the Earth.
