The Georgia Department of Transportation is advising motorists in Gordon County of a detour off College Street at the north side of State Route (SR) 156/Redbud Road, scheduled for Monday, July 18.

College Street at this location will be closed to traffic for approximately eight weeks to allow for work on the construction of a culvert. Through traffic will be detoured off College Street onto Mauldin Road, east on Henderson Bend Road and back to US 41. Local traffic on College Street will be redirected onto Henderson Bend Road and use the reverse detour route of the through traffic.

Detour signs will be placed along the detour route to help motorists navigate around the closed roadway.

“We understand that the closure of College Street at this location may cause some inconvenience and delays, but it is necessary for constructing the culvert as quickly as possible, and giving the roadway back to the traveling public,” said Kent Sager, district engineer at the Georgia DOT office in Cartersville.

The culvert construction is part of a project to improve the intersection of SR 156 and College Street, including the installation of video detection systems at this intersection. Work on this project has just begun.

The entire project is expected to be completed by the end of May 2012, at a construction cost of $822,427.

Why is the state so strapped for money, and yet contiues to install "video detection" equipment?

Why do they have all these cameras to watch us with?
