Members of the newly-formed Northwest Georgia Outdoors organization are hosting the first ever Firecracker Challenge Saturday, July 2.
The Challenge will begin with a 20-mile road bicycle event at 9 a.m. After finishing, cyclists can participate in a 5K trail run at 10:30 a.m. After runners complete the course, the next challenge is a six-mile mountain bike event starting around 11:30 a.m.
“After each event, the person or team completing each race, receives five cards,” said Katie Nameick, one of the organizers. “At 1 p.m., we will have a five-card poker draw and there will be several individual prizes and one team prize. A team is comprised of three people.”
All participants will receive a complimentary T-shirt that will be included in the cost of the event.
“We hope people of all ages and running and biking levels, including children, will come out and enjoy this challenge and meet new people, and especially support the efforts of Northwest Ga. Outdoors,” Nameick said.
The fee is $25 a person and $60 per team. A maximum of three people can be on a team.
“People are invited to bring picnic food and support their teams or participants if they don’t want to run or bike,” Nameick said.
Trail running/walking will be organized by Tom Griffith, organizer of the recent Coosawattee Challenge Run, and the cycling race and course will be coordinated by Marcus Palazzolo, Calhoun Cycling Club president.
