Each day, caregivers at Gordon Hospital strive to provide the best patient care in the area and to celebrate their contributions and dedication to the hospital and the patients they serve. Gordon Hospital observes National Nurses Week by hosting a reception and other special events in their honor.

During the reception this year, the 2011 H.E.A.R.T. of Nursing Award was presented to Sharon Bass, BSN, clinical coordinator for Gordon Hospital’s Surgical Services Department. Last year’s winner, Anita Russell, RN, made the presentation.

According to Amy Jordon, MSN, chief nursing officer at Gordon Hospital, the H.E.A.R.T. acronym stands for helpfulness, enthusiasm, achievement and adaptability, responsibility and teamwork.

“These are all qualities that Sharon exemplifies each day with a smile on her face,” Jordon said. “Her co-workers call her ‘the glue that holds the team together’ and we are so proud to honor her with this award.”

Beth Crew, BSN, director of Gordon Hospital’s Surgical Services, agreed.

“Sharon puts everything she has into doing a great job,” Crew said. “Everything she does, she does quickly, professionally, with outstanding quality and perfection. Even though she doesn’t have as much direct patient contact as she used to, she touches every patient that comes through Surgical Services by demanding that the highest standards and best practices are always followed. Sharon is respected by all that work with her.”

Bass, who was nominated for the award by her peers, has been employed by Gordon Hospital for 12 1/2 years. She and her husband, Eddie, are the proud owners of three Whippets named Alvin, Tia, and Bella. Together, they enjoy all outdoor activities and any opportunity to travel. Bass also enjoys riding her Harley Davidson motorcycle.

“This award was such a surprise, but I feel very honored,” Bass says. “I love my job at Gordon Hospital and I work everyday with wonderful nurses and people who all make a difference to our patients. The encouragement and support from my director and the leadership team at this facility instills in me the desire to be a good example for others and to be the best I can be.”

Bass earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Berry College, a Master’s degree and a BSN from Florida State University.

Having quality leaders is the backbone of any organization and Gordon Hospital is certainly no different. This year, Gordon Hospital recognized Raina Sanford, MBA, by presenting her with the annual D.O.V.E Leadership Award. D.O.V.E. stands for Dedicated, Open Minded, Value Driven, and Encouraging.

“I was very pleased to learn of Raina Sanford being selected for the D.O.V.E. Leadership Award,” says Steve Hannah, chief operating officer for Gordon Hospital. “Raina is well respected at Gordon Hospital and this award is a way for her to be recognized by her peers as an outstanding example of D.O.V.E. Leadership.”

Sanford, director of Gordon Hospital’s Radiology Department, earned an MBA in healthcare administration from Brenau University, a Bachelor of Science degree in radiology from Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences and she recently passed her exam to become a Certified Radiology Administrator. Sanford was nominated and elected to receive the award by the members of Gordon Hospital’s leadership team.

In an emotional acceptance speech, Sanford said she was very grateful for the recognition.

“It is a great honor to receive this award,” Sanford says. “I work alongside so many talented and caring people here at Gordon Hospital and to be recognized by them means so much to me. I feel blessed everyday to work at a hospital that is so focused on caring for their patients, their community, and their employees.”

Sanford and her husband, David, reside in Calhoun. She has a son, Elex Sanford, and a step-daughter, Stefanie Sanford. In her spare time, Sanford said she enjoys spending time with her family and friends.
