County and city leaders have staked out which road projects they feel are most worthy of TSPLOST (Transportation Special Project Local Option Sales Tax) funding, should the referendum pass in November 2012.
Both Gordon County and the city of Calhoun have submitted project wish lists to the Northwest Georgia Regional Commission. The TSPLOST, should it pass, would impose a one-penny sales tax in the counties in the 15 county regional commission.
If voters opt in November to keep the current SPLOST, the sales tax rate will remain at seven percent. The TSPLOST will be voted on in the 2012 referendum as a region, not individually by county. Therefore, if the referendum passes in the region, TSPLOST will be imposed on Gordon Countians, bringing the sales tax rate up another one percent.
City of Calhoun proposed projects:
Interstate 75/ Union Grove Road interchange
South Calhoun Bypass (6.8 miles from State Route 53 to State Route 53)
Airport fencing
Rehabilitation of U.S. Highway 41 from Line Street to North of Highway 156/ Redbud Road.
Widening of Highway 41 from Union Grove Road to State Route
Widening of State Route 53 from W.C. Bryant Parkway east to west of Interstate 75
Interstate 75 interchange at Highway 156 – widening of 156
Widening of U.S. 41 from Redbud Road to C.L. Moss Parkway (includes overhead railroad bridge)
Handicapped sidewalk and pedestrian crossing upgrades throughout the city
Gordon County proposed projects:
Interstate 75/ Union Grove Road interchange
South Calhoun Bypass (6.8 miles from state State Route 53 to state Highway SR 53)
Intersection improvements at State Route 53/Cash Road/Folsom Road
Intersection improvements at U.S. 41/State Route 53

Replace the bridge on State Route 225 at Newtown Creek/Coosawattee River

Intersection improvements at State Route 225/State Route 136/Pine Chapel Road

Either way, a NO WIN for us! If such a grand idea, let us pass a tax that is used ONLY in our county. On another point, in these times, Do we REALLY want to IMPROVE the roads and access for our neighbors? I think not! I will be voting NO! I wish they had a choice that said HECK NO!
We need more auto parking before we need more places to park our airplanes!
