ATHENS, Ga. (AP)-- Authorities say copper thieves are braving high-voltage currents and risking death in their quest to steal the metal.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports that suspects have made off with copper wiring from five substations in northeast Georgia already this year.

Tom Parker, a Georgia Transmission Corp. spokesman, said the substations have become targets as the price of copper rises.

Authorities say thieves who rob from substations risk electrocution when they rip out copper wires. Parker says they can also damage the substation enough to cause a blackout or leave exposed wiring that endangers utility workers who come in to make repairs.
