Mohawk Industries is closing its East Dublin plant in April and laying off 173 workers.

Mohawk officials announced the closing to workers and county officials last week.

The plant cut 400 workers in August 2009 after the economy tanked. It had had nearly 800 workers two years ago.

Cal Wray, vice president of economic development at the Dublin-Laurens County Development Authority, says Mohawk had been operating in Dublin for five decades and is the county's last textile plant.

The cut comes as the Calhoun-based Mohawk announced this week that it had more than doubled its net income by cutting costs.

Mohawk officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Associated Press.
