The enigmatic Ulysses S. Grant, 18th president and General-in-Chief of the Union Army in the Civil War, will be the topic of a lunch and learn program hosted by the Dalton State College Alumni Relations office, Tuesday, February 22, 12 noon, at Little Rome Italian Restaurant in Chatsworth.

The lunch program will be presented by Dr. John D. Fowler, B.J. and Dicksie Bandy Chair of History and Director of the Bandy Heritage Center for Dalton State, who will speak on: “‘Grant is not a mighty genius, but he is a good soldier’: An Examination of the Generalship of Ulysses S. Grant.”

“Battles are still being fought over the memory and the meaning of the war,” says Dr. Fowler. “These battles over which side was justified are interfering with historical inquiry and threatening to distort our attempt to understand the past.

“An excellent example is Ulysses S. Grant who is rising in stature because of the side he fought for more than anything else. A few decades ago Robert E. Lee was pushed off his pedestal to become mortal. It is time for Grant to receive the same treatment. We have to see these men as human,” Dr. Fowler said.

Deadline for reservations for the lunch program is Monday, February 21, and may be made by calling the Alumni Relations office of the Dalton State College Foundation at 706-272-2473. Payment is expected at the time reservations are made; cost is $5 for Dalton State alumni and $10 for the general public. Seating is limited. Little Rome is located at 1201 North 3rd Avenue in Chatsworth.
