Al Edwards began a one-year term as Calhoun’s mayor pro tempore during the Monday, Jan. 17, city council meeting.

Fellow Council Member David Hammond nominated him and suggested the board use the change in leadership as “a training opportunity for the rest of the council,” adding that any change in structure is an opportunity for the council members to learn.

Edwards takes over from Council Member George Crowley.

The council spent time concluding miscellaneous items of business, including recognition of department heads for 2011. They are as follows:

General Government:
  • City Administrator/ Clerk - Eddie Peterson

  • Director of Public Works – Kevin McEntire

  • Police Chief – Garry Moss

  • Fire Chief – Lenny Nesbitt

  • Recreation Director – Kimberly Townsend

  • Golf Professional – Eric Stewart

  • Superintendent of golf maintenance - Harold Franklin

  • Director of Finance - Alicia Stewart

    Utilities division:

  • General Manager of Utilities – Kelly Cornwell

  • Director of Water and Sewer – Jerry Crawford

  • Director of Finance – Andrea Bramlett

  • Director of Customer Service and Administration – Ray Dudkowski

  • Electric Superintendent – Larry Vickery

  • Telecommunications Superintendent – Brad Carrick

    Other appointments for 2011:
  • City Chaplain – Dr. Bert Vaughn (has served in this capacity since 1986)

  • City Attorney – Bill Bailey

  • Municipal Court Judge –Suzanne Hutchinson Smith

  • Indigent Defense Attorney – Rebecca Paris

  • Town Marshal – Randy Jackson

    Snow response

Also during the meeting, Mayor Jimmy Palmer commended city crews for their prompt response in addressing conditions brought on by the Jan. 10 snowfall.

“I can’t tell you how many citizens have stopped me (and said) how much ahead of the game (we were)” in contrast to other Georgia cities affected by the snow, Council Member David Hammond said during the council’s noon work session that day. “You could just see the spirit of teamwork (in city crews). This is our community and why would you not?”

Utilities General Manager Kelly Cornwell pointed out that employees associated with sewer services helped out in dealing with snow problems because their department did not experience any sewer-specific issues during the storm.

I wish the city atty would stop bothering me while I am smoking in the alley. Doesn't the city have something for him to do?

I checked out the GA Dept of Revenue. That is bad. I just mailed a check for $991.00 to State of Georgia. And $3804. to the Feds. Please tell me how people get a way with Tax evasion. I really would like to know. I would have been arrested and the key thrown away, if I owed what some people owe.

its not about the money! maybe the new mayor pro tem will see the city atty is wrong!!!

WE should be allowed to smoke in the alley.

If he continues to talk about this I will start smoking in front of his office and will support candidates who think the city atty should find other work!

    ok here I go.........

#1. Smoking does not make you any less of a person, Jesus still loves you!

#2. If they raised taxes on smokes, people wouldn't stop smoking, they would just buy cheaper cigarettes.

#3. Bill Bailey isn't worried about the people living in tents because they don't live in the alley behind his office!

#4. He probably doesn't use the parking deck anyway!

#5. If anyone wants to pull anything out of their pocket and smoke it, call me!

ok, voice, why are you so hostile to the smokers? i mean at least we are trying to smoke in an alley out of the public eye. and anotherthing yeah we are worried about it because this is something that shouldn't be an issue anyways. let us smoke in a dark alley away from everyone. and MR BIlly Baily made this an issue, not us we are voicing our oppinions, as are you. but it's not like we are setting there blowing it in your face. we just want a place to smoke in peace at work, without it being a big deal.

The problem with the City ATTY is he didn't think this ordinance through. I mean how can you enforce this ordinacne. Are we going to paint lines for smoking and non smoking roads. How do you define alley? Whats the difference in an alley and a cul-de-sac? I guess we will hire a consultant to help with all that. Some how the goverment has lost touch with the people. Even in little ole Calhoun.

Well, I don't smoke anymore, but when I did, I remember what it was like trying to find a spot in public where you could smoke. Smoking in the alley is not hurting anything at all, I mean would he rather everyone smoke in front of his office! BUT, since he wants to push it so hard, maybe he should just make it so women can't vote anymore or so that my 3yo can go work at Mohawk for 40 cents an hour!

    MR City ATTY,

Why don't you stop the city convicts from smoking at the back door of the city police station. I know they are probably washing your car but if property owners downtown can't smoke at our back door why don't you stop the convicts first?
