A change in motor vehicle registration requirements has considerably reduced the amount of time an individual has to apply for and obtain a license plate.

According to a press release from the Georgia Department of Revenue, effective Jan. 1 owners of any motor vehicle not purchased from a registered dealer are now required to apply for registration and a title at the County Tag Office within seven days of purchasing the vehicle.

The previous time period was 30 days.

The vehicle owner will then receive a temporary tag from the tag office, according to the release, which will be valid for 30 days.

Only temporary plates issued from registered car dealers or county tag offices will be considered valid under this new law.
