ATLANTA (AP)-- Georgia safety officials say 12 people were killed in car wrecks over the New Year's holiday weekend.

The Georgia Department of Public Safety said that number tops the 11 people killed during the same 78-hour period last year.

Two people died in a head-on collision Saturday in Rome. Three people were killed in separate crashes in Albany. And state officials say fatal wrecks were also reported in Villa Rica, Greene County, Sylvania, Thomasville, Douglas and Savannah.

The state patrol says officers responded to 379 crashes resulting in 208 injuries between 6 p.m. on Dec. 30 and midnight Jan. 2.

Those numbers also are an increase from last year, when the troopers reported 352 crashes resulting in 192 injuries.
