In 1805, Cherokee Chief James Vann opened his new brick mansion to the Moravian missionaries in order to hold one of the first Christmas celebrations in the Cherokee Nation. To honor this tradition, the Chief Vann House Historic Site will be holding its “Cherokee Christmas by Candlelight” on Dec. 10 and 11 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The public is invited to come enjoy the sights and sounds of a nineteenth century Christmas in on of America’s best-preserved Cherokee homes.

The museum at the Vann House will also be open during the candlelight tours. Visitors can view museum exhibits and a short film before starting the tour. Luminaries will light the paths between the museum, and there well be guides stationed throughout to answer questions.

Harpist Jane Davis will play both nights in the Vann mansion. To end the tour, visitors may also tour four restored Cherokee log buildings also lit by candles. Complimentary hot apple cider and Moravian cookies will be served beside a warm fireplace inside Vannn’s reconstructed kitchen.

The admission is $5 for adults, $4.50 for seniors, and $3.50 for youth. Children five and under are free. The Vann House is located at the intersection of GA Hwy 225 and 52 Alternate, near Chatsworth.
