Gordon Hospital and Gordon EMS will host a special candlelight service on Thursday, Nov. 18 to honor the sacrifices made by local servicemen and women, as well as their families.

According to Courtney Taylor, director of Gordon EMS, the Second Annual event will be held at the Gordon Central High School Ratner Stadium beginning at 7 p.m.

“We are asking our entire community to come together for a time of prayer and remembrance,” Taylor explained. “We also hope that all of our local veterans will attend so that we may recognize them for their service.”

Local veterans and current servicemen presenting this year’s keynote address will include Calhoun Police Chief Garry Moss and SFC Ken Brooks. Special music will be presented by the Calhoun Middle School Chorus, directed by Dani Plunkett. Other participants in the program will include the Region One EMS Honor Guard; the Gordon County Sheriff Office Honor Guard; Patriot Guard Riders, Bagpiper Marsha Ely; Taylor Hicks, Sonoraville High School trumpeter; and Deanna Lee, five-year-old kindergarten student at Red Bud Elementary and daughter of Richard and Stephanie Lee, who will be leading the Pledge of Allegiance.

“As we approach the holiday season, it is our goal to be that light from home for our servicemen and women, who put their lives on the line for us daily,” Taylor added. “We hope all of Gordon County and our surrounding neighbors will join us in sending a message of thanks to them and to their families.”

Candles will be given to attendees on a first come, first served basis. However, due to limited quantities, organizers are asking attendees to bring candles and lighters from home as well.

The Gordon Central High School Ratner Stadium is located at 335 Warrior Path. From I-75 Exit 315, travel west on Red Bud Road to the first traffic light. Turn right onto Warrior Path. For more information on the event, please call 706-602-7800, ext. 2305.
