Greg Green, Principal of Calhoun Middle School encourages everyone in the community to “come out and enjoy this worthwhile event.”
For further details visit the school’s website at Calhounschools.org, and then choose “Calhoun Middle School” on the main menu. The event is sponsored by the school’s Parent Teacher Student Learning Organization (PTSLO).
The funds raised from the race will be used to support the school’s goal of increasing academic achievement.
“The PTSLO decided that a 5K race would be a great way to promote the health of our community and raise money at the same time,” Nancy Mathis, president of the Calhoun Middle School PTSLO said. “School budgets have suffered a great deal during this economic downturn and we hope to raise necessary funds to spend in the classroom to benefit our students.”
Calhoun Middle PTSLO is appreciative to David Gomez, historic site manager at New Echota, for his part in allowing the school to use the historic grounds. New Echota was a planned community established by the Cherokee Nation in 1825. It thrived until the removal of the Cherokee during the “Trail of Tears.”
It was also the home of the Cherokee Phoenix and Indian Advocate, the first Native American newspaper, which was first published in 1828 and is still published by the Cherokee Nation today. If anyone wishes to visit the museum after the race, there is a small admission fee.
Calhoun Middle School PTSLO would also like to thank the following sponsors for their financial support.
