October 24 proved to be a beautiful day for a walk with family, friends, and members of various churches of Gordon County. Everyone there recognized the need of the area food banks for additional funds, and $1,682.78 was turned in at the walk, and additional funds may come in from people who weren’t able to attend.

Phil White, pastor of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, welcomed all participants. Stacy Long of the Voluntary Action Center, Earl Brewer of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and Tammy Buchannon from the First Baptist Church of Resaca, representing Blewer Food Center, spoke about the hundreds of families who are being helped each week at the food banks. The number of families who need help continues to grow.

More funds or food are needed. Close to 100 walkers traveled the walking trails at the Calhoun Recreational Center to acknowledge the need for help. Many need to be thanked for their support of the walk. The Calhoun Recreation Center allowed use of the facilities for the walk. CVS, IGA, K-Mart, Wal-Mart, and Rite Aid donated bottled water for the walkers.

Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home and Thomas Funeral Home provided tents for registration. Chuck Porch of the Calhoun Fire Department allowed the organizers to use the speaker system in his vehicle so that everyone could hear the speakers. Many thanks go out to our walkers, representing these churches: Calhoun First Prebyterian Church, Eastgate Baptist Church, Georgia Cumberland Academy, Meadowdale Baptist Church, New Echota United Methodist Church, Resaca First Baptist Church, Seventh-day Adventist Church, St. Clements Catholic Church, St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, and St. Vincent de Paul. Thanks go to Connie Connell of First Prebyterian Church, also, and the many members of New Echota United Methodist Church for manning the registration tables and setting things up for the walk.

NEUMC youth gave out armbands for the walkers that had Luke 3:11 on them. Luke 3:11 says- “John replied, ‘If you have two coats, give one to the poor. If you have food, share it with those who are hungry.’”

Thank you to everyone who helped make the 2010 Gordon County Hunger Walk a success.
