In a successful football program, there’s always those people behind the scenes that help make everything run smoothly by making sure all the little things are taken care of, and that allows the team’s coaches and players to focus more on their main goal — winning games.
For the Calhoun High football team and football cheerleaders, those people are the Calhoun Touchdown Club.
The Touchdown Club serves many roles, but their main one is to support and help the football program and football cheerleaders in any way they can.
“It’s all about the kids,” said Calhoun Touchdown Club President Terry Brumlow. “We want to support them and allow them to have the best experience possible so they can look back on their time at Calhoun and say they really enjoyed it.”
The Touchdown Club helps the team in many ways whether that is providing meals for the coaches and players, helping with Senior Night or the end of the year banquet or even helping offset the costs of extra equipment or camps players attend. They are also responsible for creating Jacket Pride Park, which was established a few years ago in the northeast corner of Phil Reeve Stadium to showcase the history and tradition of the program through the championship banners and engraved pavers from fans and alumni.
Brumlow, a 1983 graduate of Calhoun, said that being a member of the Touchdown Club is just a way to get more involved with the team.
“It’s really about having an avenue to show your support more than just coming to the games,” said Brumlow. “The members wear their t-shirts to the games that only they have, and they just take a lot of satisfaction in being a part of the Club and helping the kids.”
The Calhoun Touchdown Club actually became an official tax-deductible, non-profit organization back in 2007. Membership is open to anyone. Membership cost for an individual is $50, which includes a t-shirt and a window decal, or for a family is $75, which includes two t-shirts and a window decal. They also sell locker sponsorships for $75 to further show their support for a certain player.
Brumlow said those wanting to become a member should contact the Touchdown Club directly. He said they are also working on a website that should be ready soon so people could join online.
With the success of the Calhoun program over the last few years, it’s never been a better time to join the club according to Brumlow.
“The winning is a great part of it, but the biggest thing is just seeing the kids and helping them succeed,” said Brumlow. “We have such a big percentage of the student body at Calhoun that is involved on Friday nights either on the football team, in the band or as a cheerleader. It’s great to be a part of that."
As the season approaches, the big project for the Club is getting the football program ready so that it is printed and back by the time the first Friday night of the season comes around. New board member Kelli Walraven is responsible for heading up the program this year. The deadline for the program is June 28 so anyone wanting to get something in, should contact Walraven in the next two weeks.
