*The American Legion Paul Gwin Post #47 will observe Veterans Day with a short ceremony and placement of a wreath in front of the WWI Memorial on Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. The ceremony will take place at the American Legion Post on West Line Street. The public and all veterans are invited to attend.
*Gordon Central High School’s band and chorus will present a “Salute to Our Hometown Heroes” at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, in the school’s main gym. Lt. Col Throckmorton, commander of the Atlanta Recruiting Battalion, will be the guest speaker. A plaque honoring all GCHS graduates who have served in the military will be dedicated. A reception for all military guests and their families will follow.
*Calhoun High School’s Veterans Day Assembly will be held Thursday, Nov. 11, at 9:30 a.m., at the Calhoun Civic Auditorium. The assembly, which is sponsored by the Calhoun Service League and the Young Republicans, is open to the public.
*Calhoun VFW Post 5376 will have its annual Veterans Day Dinner Thursday, Nov. 11 at 6 p.m. Reservations are required ... John Gwizdak, former VFW National Commander-in-Chief, will be the featured speaker. A highly decorated Vietnam veteran, Gwizdak is recognized as a leader in veteran’s affairs. He presently serves as quartermaster for the VFW Department of Georgia.
*The American Legion, along with the City of Fairmount, will host a Veteran’s Day celebration Thursday, Nov. 11, in Tate Park downtown Fairmount starting at 5 p.m.
*Patriots Fire: Lights from Home, a candlelight service to honor soldiers and their families, will take place Thursday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m. at the Gordon Central High School football stadium. Candles will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Attendees are asked to bring candles to ensure everyone has one. Collection bins will be on site for items for our soldiers including hygiene items, blankets, hand warmers, socks, cold medicine, pens and other items. The event will be hosted by Gordon EMS and Gordon Hospital.
