The theme for VBS was “Be a Hero”, a program written and developed by Melissa De Ark, the leader of this year’s program.
De Ark wanted the children to know that the Bible holds stories of people, regular people, who did great things. She wanted them to realize that Bible heroes got their strength from God.
Each night the program began at 6:30 p.m. as the children sang and learned several new songs. Activities then followed in the science lab and the craft rooms.
Following their evening snack they returned to the sanctuary to watch a skit about a Bible hero. They learned of Joseph who forgave his treacherous brothers; Joshua, who obeyed God and led the Israelites as they surrounded the city of Jericho and the walls fell down; Jonathan, who was loyal to God and his friend David; Esther, who was brave and saved her people from death; and Daniel, who was faithful to God and escaped the den of lions unharmed.
Saturday morning at the worship service the children sang three special songs they had learned during the week; all about being heroes for God.
A large cadre of volunteers helped each evening with various aspects of the program. It was another successful experience in working with children at Vacation Bible School.
