A weather system that brought in a tornado that ravaged Adairsville and left one man dead Wednesday, left a staggering path of destruction in Gordon County later in the day.

Authorities say a weather system containing a strong squall line moved through Georgia in an East-Northeast direction, leaving homes, trees and utilities in rubble.

According to the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) preliminary report that was released on Jan. 30:

The weather system was approximately 1,000 miles in length. It moved through portions of the country, affecting Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Indiana.

The system caused widespread power outages, property damage, personal injuries and at least one death in Georgia and one death in Tennessee.

There have been nine injuries reported to GEMA in Bartow County and eight injuries reported in Gordon County as of Jan. 30.

The preliminary reports from GEMA show 250 structures damages in Gordon and 95 structure damages in Bartow.

The tornado touched down in Gordon County in the vicinity of Farmville and Sonoraville, and the tornado in Adairsville touched down around 11:12 a.m., according to GEMA.

The infrastructure impact in Gordon County was listed as power outages. The Bartow infrastructure impact was listed as power outages, natural gas leaks, Interstate 75 closed due to overturned and damaged vehicles including an overturned tractor-trailer. Adairsville water treatment plant was impacted with reduced supply because of water main damage, which resulting in a boil water advisory.

The property damage in Gordon County listed multiple structures in and around Farmville and Sonoraville communities, including some structural collapses with entrapment; Eight poultry houses were destroyed, and five GEMA damage assessment teams were deploy on the morning of Jan. 30.

Initial response by local first responders focused on life safety in both Bartow and Gordon County, and both counties were declared a Local State of Emergency. The goal was to immediate search for and treat any of the injured, re-opening roadways and power restoration by providers.

The state response to the situation resulted in Georgia Search and Rescue Taskforce 6 completed search and rescue operations in both Bartow and Gordon County. In Adairsville the Red Cross opened one shelter housing 20 to 30 residents at Manning Mill Youth Facility, and in Gordon County the Red Cross opened one shelter at Belmont Baptist Church.

Salvation Army opened food canteens in both Gordon County and Adairsville, and law enforcement personnel from Georgia State Patrol and Department of Natural Resources assisted with security operations in both areas.
