Blake Eaton with Yancey, in Resaca, adds to the pile of more than 15 Gordon County School bus mufflers he has removed before fitting them with new filters.
According to Gordon County Transportation Director Geary Cooper, out of 120 buses employed by Gordon County, 56 of those buses, that are model years 1998 thru 2004, will be fitted with new mufflers proven to reduce diesel emissions.
An employee from the state visited the Transportation Department to spot check the installation of the filters purchased by the grant and documented all buses that had been converted so far.
Blake Eaton, an associate from Yancey, located in Resaca was present at the Transportation Department removing each muffler from buses, model years 1998 thru 2004, replacing each one with new mufflers with the diesel emission reduction filters.
According to Cooper, one bus will remove approximately 72 cars from the roadways regarding student transportation to and from schools, and a new “no idling,” policy keeps students less exposed to the diesel emitted by buses.
“Since the buses are around the school and they are helping keep the air clean, then the air around the school and the air around the kids will stay clean. It’s all about the kids, it always will be,” said Cooper.
The project’s expected completion date is next week, after all 56 buses have been fitted with new mufflers.
