Jose Rivas aka “Pepe Loco” (middle) and his wife Rebecca (far right), talked to Foreign Language and P.E. classes today. Jose works as a server at El Nopal Restaurant in Calhoun. He told SHS students his story and encouraged them to follow their dreams and not make excuses. He told them, “It is up to you to achieve your dreams!” Also pictured is Jose Gomez, translating for Pepe.
More than 30 community speakers were in classrooms to present on a wide range of career-related topics.
The main purposes for the day is to bring professionals from the community in to meet and interact with students and teachers, which may result in lifelong connections, and to help students see the relationship between the classes they have now and their potential careers.
“This started as a way for us to provide contacts for our teachers,” said SHS principal Bruce Potts, “But five years later, it has grown into much more. We now realize the sooner a student understands the connection between what they are learning in school and how it impacts their career down the road, the sooner they’ll be a successful student.”
