Several local wrestlers took the trip to Macon over the weekend with hopes of capturing a state title in their respective weight classes.

Sonoraville’s Cody Kuhn, one of nine local wrestlers who qualified for the State Traditional Tournament, came the closest.

Kuhn, a senior, reeled off two straight wins in the Class AAA 152-pound weight class to advance to the championship round. He first defeated Hart County’s Brandon Webb by a 3-0 decision and then took a 9-4 decision over Central-Carrollton’s Jarrett Thomas in the second round.

Kuhn then came up just short of a state title, falling in the championship match to Appling County’s Demarko Dixon by a third-round pin. The weekend wrapped up a stellar senior season for Kuhn, who finished 30-3 overall this year.

Calhoun’s Donnell Anthony, Sonoraville’s Jarrett Derryberry and Sonoraville’s Kyle Chastain all took home fourth-place finishes in their divisions.

Anthony, who went to Macon looking for a second state title after placing first in the 138-pound division last year at state, took fourth in the Class AA 160-pound weight class as he came up just short in the third-place match against Jefferson’s Zach Rhymer, losing a 4-3 decision.

The two losses at state were Anthony’s only this season as he wrapped up his career with a 38-2 senior campaign.

Chastain was fourth in the Class AAA 113-pound weight class as he went 2-2 at state to finish the year with 42 wins, and Derryberry finished fourth in the Class AAA 160-pound weight class, also going 2-2 to get to 35 wins for the year.

Sonoraville’s Matt Charles earned a fifth-place finish in the Class AAA 132-pound weight class, winning two matches in Macon.

Sonoraville’s Abel Diaz (182), Sonoraville’s Austin Tillman (126) and Calhoun’s Luke Green (182) also competed in Macon over the weekend.

Sonoraville’s Ryan Farist (145) earned a state berth but was unable to take the trip to Macon because of an injury.

The strong showing in Macon wraps up a solid year for Sonoraville, who finished first in the Area Duals and Area Traditionals tournaments over the past couple months along with solid showings in several other tournaments along the way. They also finished only behind one team, Woodward Academy, for number of wrestlers earning state berths at Class AAA West Sectionals at Ringgold two weeks ago.

Of the seven Firebirds who earned state berths, six of them will return next season with Kuhn being the only senior who wrestled over the weekend.

Both Calhoun wrestlers who appeared in Macon, Anthony and Green, were seniors, but the Jackets will also return a large cast of wrestlers from this year’s varsity squad for next season.

The Jackets also had a solid season finishing second to Lovett at both the Area 3-AA Traditionals and Duals.

Several wrestlers from around Northwest Georgia won state titles in Macon over the weekend, including Chattooga's JJ Blankenship (Class AA-126), Gordon Lee's Jonathan Ragsdale (Class A-113), Darlington's Jule Peak (Class A-126), Gordon Lee's Alex Spires (Class A-138), Gordon Lee's Will Jacks (Class A-145) and Darlington's Hayden Cook (Class A-170).
