Soon, smokers may not be allowed to light a cigarette in any alleyway in Calhoun.

City council is discussing putting an ordinance in place prohibiting smoking in these areas because of the fire hazard it poses.

The idea was put forth by City Attorney Bill Bailey, who said he routinely observes groups of 10 to 15 people gathered in a downtown alley to smoke.

“They’re very dangerous places,” he said of the closely-cordoned areas. “I think it’s a very serious matter.”

“One flip of a cigarette into a dumpster and we’ve got a problem,” he added.

One specific alleyway he referred to is home to a furniture refinishing business, he said; fire near components used to treat wood could be a serious fire hazard.

Council members agreed to consider an ordinance banning smoking in alleyways, but Council Member David Hammond pointed out that it would have to be enforced throughout the entire city.

“One fire downtown is a disaster,” he said. “But it’s (the ordinance) got to be enforced to everybody.”

Property cleanup

Council also discussed cleanup for a property at 420 South Wall Street. The house that stood on it burned last year and “without a doubt cannot be repaired at any reasonable expense,” according to Bailey.

The owner has not responded to the city’s queries regarding cleanup processes, he said.

In order to conduct cleanup, the city will most likely put a lien on the property, explained City Administrator Eddie Peterson; the lien will be paid later by the entity that eventually endeavors to sell the property.

Also during the Monday, Jan. 17 meeting, city council members:

*Approved a beer package license request from Patsy Colleps for Chevron Food Mart at 549 Highway 53 in Calhoun.

*Set qualifying fees for the 2011 elections. They are as follows: mayor - $432; council - $144; school board - $1 (school board members serve with no payment, hence the considerably lower qualifying fee)

prohealth since your so worried about everything and seem to want tell others what to do, you better give up driving and take to walking!Ever considered that one while sitting in line at a stop light sucking in exhaust fumes??????????

Oh but I'm so sure your one of them that's all for electric cars and the communities they will be herded into.Due to the limited range on a charge up,This means you must live within range of your battery capacity to make it to and from work! By the way,how much was power your bill last month? How much you think it would raise it to charge a couple of cars daily? OFF TOPIC,OFF TOPIC !

Well you seem to have an answer for it all!

communist or socialist ? Which one you be ?

Anybody heard of the new law? Seems you'll now have to turn you car off at stop signs and red lights or be arrested and charged for pumping exhaust fumes into the car behind you!Oh,it's coming, just wait and see.

Whats the big deal about smoking in the alley. You're not going to ban smoking even the current President smokes. Do you think he smokes in the white house or does he go out back?

Maybe the city atty should ban smoking in the white house too!!!

im sorry prohealth if you misunderstood the demeanor of my opinion, im just saying unless someone is directly effected by the cigarette smoke etc. then it shouldnt matter considering the other health risk products/habits and so on i just feel if its their choice then who cares if it isnt bothering anyone else, they just want to be assholes and have something to complain about. telling people not to smoke away from the public is like telling someone not to drive through town or eat a twinkie. sorry you weren't mature enough to understand what i was getting at took offense directly i do apologize.

@prohealth.... correlation does not prove causation. Any science course should reinforce this basic tenet of epistemology.

Furthermore, resorting the ad hominem, increases neither the respect you desire, nor your own feeling of efficacy. However, should you instead wish to make a point worth proving, logically, please do so. Regardless, your opinion is based on emotion and faith(by your own admission) obviously, anyone can understand that is not the way to run and local, state, or federal government.

Sadly this is too easily overlooked

Obviously the maturity and intelligence level of most (not all) of the ones commenting is very low. And yes I do believe drinking alcohol is wrong aswell.(not what this discussion is about) I have never claimed to be perfect but none of my flaws affect the well being of myself or others. There has to be a time when common sense steps in and you know that smoking is a direct cause of many diseases. Obesity is too, but this is about smoking. Oh well, some people gripe and complain over every little thing. The city council/policemen are not the ones 'griping over every little thing' it's the ones that have posted on here. The ones that don't comprehend the difference in a public discussion forum and a petty argument! Grow up guys.

@Chelle Chelle maybe buying a dictionary would help you learn to spell. =)

I suppose the city will hire a consultant to mark streets, alleys, drives, avenues, highways etc...

So we know where we can smoke. I am sure then they can put smoking and non smoking signs up throughout the city.

Whats the difference in a dead end street and an alley?
