Team signup is still underway for the annual Mud Volleyball tournament, in memory of Sarah Williams. The tournament will take place on Saturday, Aug. 20. Teams will begin playing at 9 a.m.
Entry fees start at $200 per team (early bird special) before Aug. 5, and spectators are welcome to watch for free. A portion of the proceeds will go to Boys and Girls Club.
The tournament will be played in three set matches that last no longer than 15 minutes each. Teams must win by two points, unless time has expired, allowing more teams to participate longer.
Rising 6th grade students and up are eligible to play in the tournament and participants under the age of 18 must have permission from a parent.
“Gordon Optimist Club would like to invite everyone to come out and support this year’s Sarah Williams Memorial Mud Volleyball Tournament,” said Optimist Club President Raina Sanford. “We had a great turnout last year and hope to have even more teams participate this year.”
Last year, the tournament brought in more than $4,000 for children with childhood diseases. It featured 17 school, business and corporate teams who battled for first place in shin-deep mud.
Team captains must check-in at 8 a.m. and playtime will begin at 9 a.m. on Aug. 20 at the Calhoun recreation center on McDaniel Station Road. Food and drinks will be available at the tournament.
Sanford said the event would feature food and several child friendly activities.
