Candidates seeking a spot on the Gordon County Commission from District 5 will have to wait a little longer.

Tom Bledsoe and Kevin Cunningham will meet in a runoff for the Gordon County Commission, District 5 seat on Aug. 21 following a deadlock in Tuesday night’s primary elections.

Bledsoe secured 40.43 percent of the vote; Cunningham carried 31.46 percent of the vote and Sam Jewett gathered 28.11 percent, not enough to get him into the runoff. A candidate must secure more than 50 percent of the votes to secure a win and avoid a runoff.

In a situation in which no clear winner is elected the top two candidates go to a runoff.

Early voting for the runoff begins on Aug. 13.

County Commission incumbents did not have as good a night, as both incumbents were defeated by political newcomers.

County Commission Chairperson Judy Bailey was defeated by Jeff Gazaway 3,867 (55.2 percent) to 3,065.

Norris Sexton defeated three-term commissioner Alvin Long 3,672 (51.4 percent) to 3,466. Neither of the Republican candidates face opposition in November.
