Local Swimming: Five Blue Barracudas swimmers win state titles; others medal at GRPA State Swim Meet in Tifton

Five swimmers from the Calhoun Blue Barracudas swim team won state titles at the GRPA State Swim Meet in Tifton this past Friday and Saturday.

Will Haley (7-8 boys) took the state title in the 25 yard Freestyle. After breaking the district record, Allie Workman (9-10 Girls) placed first in the 50 yard freestyle and continued on to win a second title in the 25 yard Butterfly. Micah Klingbeil (9-10 Boys) clinched the titles in both the 25 yard Butterfly and the 25 yard Breaststroke. Bryant Mathis (15-18 Boys) and Marah McEntyre (15-18 Girls) took the titles in the 50 yard Breaststroke.

The team, coached by George News, placed 8th out of 29 teams. With over 30 swimmers represented from the Blue Barracudas, the team had 26 members medal. Listed below are the medalists:

Boys 9-10: Joshua Tolson placed fourth in the 25 yard Backstroke

Girls 11-12: Alison Driggers placed eighth in the 50 yard Breaststroke

Boys 11-12: Cal Parker placed second in the 100 yard Freestyle and second in the 50 yard Breaststroke

Girls 13-14: Cassie Workman placed eighth in 100 yard Freestyle and eighth in the 50 yard Butterfly, Grace Converse placed eighth in the 50 yard Freestyle, Kailey Klingbeil placed fourth in the 100 yard Individual Medley and third in the 50 yard Backstroke

Boys 13-14: Cody Workman placed sixth in the 100 yard Freestyle

Girls 15-18: Geanna Funes placed eighth in the 50 yard Breaststroke, Lindsey Driggers placed sixth in the 100 Individual Medley

Boys 15-18: Zack Beeler placed eighth in the 100 Individual Medley and eighth in the 50 yard Backstroke, Bryant Mathis placed sixth in the 100 Individual Medley

Several of the Barracudas’ relay teams also medaled. They are listed below:

Boys 9-10: Relay team placed third in the 100 yard Freestyle Relay and third in the 100 yard Medley Relay. Members of the team included Micah Klingbeil, Bryce Bates, George Russell, and Joshua Tolson.

Girls 9-10: Relay team placed fifth in the 100 yard Medley Relay and sixth in the 100 yard Freestyle Relay. Members of the team included Lillie Lewis, Nena Marcus, Allie Workman, and Vivianne Funes.

Boys 11-12: Relay team placed fifth in the 200 yard Medley Relay and seventh in the 200 yard Freestyle Relay. Members of the team included Coen Marcus, Grant Lewis, Cal Parker, Rucker Reeves.

Girls 13-14: Relay team place eighth in the 200 yard Medley Relay. Members of the team included Kailey Klingbeil, Grace Converse, Cassie Workman, and Madi Holbert.

Girls 15-18: Relay team placed seventh in the 200 yard Medley Relay. Members of the team included Lindsay Driggers, Geanna Funes, Savannah Swink, and Marah McEntyre.

Other swimmers who also competed include Cecilia Swink, Grace Jones, Kathryn Russell, Braylyn To, Jacob Tolson, Lysander Ortega and Andrew McEntyre.

The Calhoun Blue Barracudas is a summer swim league that practices at the Calhoun Recreation Pool. The team competes in dual meets throughout the season in the Chattanooga Area Swim League and competes in the district and state competitions sanctioned by the Georgia Recreation and Park Association.

The swim team is open to boys and girls ages six to 18.

Registration takes place each year in May with practices beginning as soon as school ends for the summer break. Contact the Calhoun Recreation Department for more information.
