The number of tires collected was not counted, however the disposed tires filled a 52-foot tractor trailer, according to Jeff Champion, Gordon County Buildings and Grounds Director, who has been involved with the event since its inception.
Champion believes the amount of tires collected is less than last year, but he believes this could be “a good thing,” and hopes that a majority of old and unused tires is becoming controlled.
Also this year, residents of Gordon County were allowed to bring in old appliances for free disposal, of which Champion said there was a little of everything.
Residents have one more opportunity to dispose of old tires and appliances again Saturday, April 21. This will be the last opportunity until next year.
The Gordon County Board of Commissioners and Santek Waste Services sponsors the program, which opens up the city’s dump to Gordon County residents to dispose of old tires and appliances.
The Redbone Ridges Landfill at 1224 Pleasant Hill Rd, Ext. Ranger, Ga. will be accepting old car tires and appliances. The landfill offers the service to residents to keep people from disposing of tires other places because old tires can be hazardous, according to Commission Chairperson Judy Bailey.
Appliances that can be disposed include refrigerators, stoves, washers, dryers and microwaves.
The landfill limits 10 tires per resident; no tire or appliance dealers may participate. Tires on rims and tractor tires will not be accepted.
